One Year Into Pandemic
In the past one year, healthcare, Public Health and healthcare workers have been some of the commonly used terms, but what is Public Health and have our policy systems created structures to provide equal access and provisions for all?
The main aim of public health is to prevent diseases and their outbreak, and Covid-19 is the greatest public health challenge of our times. As we mark one year to the declaration of Covid-19 as a global pandemic, let's reflect on its impact:-
Public Health: More than 118 million people fell ill with the coronavirus, and 11.3 million were affected in India. The pandemic posed severe challenges on the health system, health workers both at the rural and urban level.
Jobs: The impact on jobs has been uneven across sectors. With close to 10.9 million jobs were lost in total across India, the most severely affected were aviation, hospitality and travel. However, healthcare and EdTech saw a spike in job openings.
Government Support: The government of India announced a relief package in phases- with the announcement of a $22 million relief package, followed by a stimulus package of 2.65 lakh crore rupees.Â

Outcome budget by Delhi government
Outcome Budget is an approach adopted by the Delhi Government led by Aam Aadmi Party. In the outcome budget of 2021-22, 2113 indicators were covering 595 schemes of different departments. The outcome budget has been designed in a way that it shows the infrastructures, schemes and programs and the benefits which people got from it from the perspective of the citizens.
This year the top-performing departments are Health (80% ), Environment ( 79% ), Power ( 75% ) and PWD(73%) (Source: Times of India).Â
This approach has added to the credibility, accountability and transparency of the current Delhi Government.Â
