Karnataka to vote in May
Karnataka has been a focal point of politics ever since the elections for the state were announced. Currently, Bharatiya Janta Party is in power, and the only southern state with the party's presence.
The upcoming elections are a fight between three players: BJP, Congress and JD(S). Aam Aadmi Party too has claimed of contesting this election for all the seats. The C-voter survey is inclined towards Congress’s victory.
The competition is stiff, and the factors are evolving. Here are some key factors to it.
The triangle
The trio of Yediyurappa, HD Deve Gowda and Siddaramaiah have been defining the politics of the state. As per the C-Voter survey, Siddaramaiah has come out to be a clear choice for CM, Yediyurappa is critical for BJP’s existence in the state.
Whereas, JD(S) HD Deve Gowda and his son HD Kumaraswamy are instrumental in bringing back the party to power in the state.
Mistrust in the current government
The current Chief Minister of Karnataka has not lived up to the expectations of the citizens. The lack of trust is highly visible in the results of the voter survey.
Anti-incumbency
Covid management, urban development and corruption have been a turn-off for the people of Karnataka. The failure of the current government to address these points has led to a rise in anti-incumbency. The sense of anti-incumbency has been reflected in the C-Voter survey’s 33.3% of voters.
These loopholes have allowed the opposition to cash in, by highlighting and building campaigns around it.
Religious Polarisation
The survey highlighted issues raised by voters, on religious polarisation. Actions and lack of balance in policies have highlighted the divide in politics.
A week in Supreme Court
Indian judiciary has witnessed interesting events of attention, anxiety and articulations over same-sex marriage. The issue is complex, and there are divisions and intersections at each corner.
The petitions started with the argument “ marriage was a union of two people, not just a man and woman, that concepts of marriage had changed over time, and that denying them the right to marry violated the constitution.”
Whereas on Day 6 of the live-streamed hearing, the solicitor-general Tushar Mehta presented the stance of the government opposing marriage equality for the LGBQT+ community.
The government holds the stand that the judiciary has no role in hearing a socio-legal issue, rather it should be taken into parliament.
Despite the government's objection, the Supreme Court went ahead. The intent was to look at petitions from the lens of Special Marriages Act 1954 combined with legal tweaks to include LGBTQ+, which would give access to the bouquet of rights that come under the law.
However, as discussions unravelled, the act turned out to be more complex than imagined. The five-judge bench has realised that tweaking one law is not enough, as it's a web of interlinked laws. These laws cover divorce, adoption, succession, maintenance and other issues.
April Upskilling Cohort
Cohort 1 of Communicating with Emotional Intelligence concluded last week, with a group of exciting and passionate learners. Some key takeaways from the program.
✔️ Categorisation of intelligence and intersection of each aspect to another.
✔️ To be an effective communicator, emotional intelligence is key. None of the concepts can exist in isolation and are integral to daily communication.
✔️ Learning techniques to inculcate emotional intelligence is essential, rather than just understanding the concept.
✔️ Communication, whether written or verbal, can create a better impact and response from the other end if combined with emotional intelligence.
✔️Technical skills are not equipped to succeed until combined with people and power skills.
We have an interesting lineup of upskilling programs coming up, stay tuned for more! Our programs are designed to make the transfer from campus to corporate an experience.
