Hello, hope you had an amazing week!
Today we are talking about two interesting pieces on women and their representation in professional spaces, along with changing dynamics of digital media and India’s comeback from recession.
Have a great weekend!
Lets Talk about Women
This week we came across two interesting articles which reflected on the perception of women in professional and social spheres. So here we share some excerpts of the pieces and the similarity of concerns in different domains.
Women in Economics
In a recent article for The New York Times, Ben Casselman wrote about the growing hostility and gender bias against women in Economics. It has been subtle and direct, with women economists being bombarded with 15 questions in a go, than the male counterpart in the panels and conferences.
After seeing such instances, economists Dr Modestino and Dr Wolfers went on collecting data to understand the reasons and trend. One vital observation of the study has been that women are posed with 12 per cent more questions than men that are patronising and hostile. Dr Modestino shared that “ it measures something that we thought cannot be measured, It links it to a potential reason that women are underrepresented in the profession.”
Men of Clubhouse- Let us speak, please!
Undoubtedly the clubhouse has gained the attention of every professional- but does it give space to all its users?
A US-based media house went ahead and talked to hundreds of women clubhouse users and there was one common complaint- men interrupting.
The similarity in behaviours and perceptions, can actually make us loose on lots of ideas. What do you think about this?
A New Twist
On 25 February, Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced new rules for OTT platforms, Online News and Social Media. Some of them are-
Social Media giants to appoint India-based compliance officers to regulate content.
Companies to disclose the “first originator” of any mischievous message.
To remove or disable offensive or illegal content within 36 hours of notification or court order.
A committee of ministers or representatives to have powers in hearing complaints on violation of code of ethics.
What do you think about these?
India exits Recession

Context- India had officially slipped into recession in the July-September period as GDP shrank by 23.9 per cent in June and 7.5 per cent in September.
Way ahead- Reserve Bank of India in its Monetary Policy Review has projected a GDP growth of 10.5 per cent in the financial year of 2021-22. In the same time frame, the IMF expects India to grow at the rate of 11.5 per cent.
