Who elects who?
A recent Supreme Court ruling made amends in the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioners.Â
The ruling stated that a committee made of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, or the leader of the single largest opposition party, and the Chief Justice of India- would recommend the position holders.Â
Power of Public Interest Litigation
To start with, first PIL on the matter was filed in 2015, and later in 2018 by Ashwini Upadhyaya. The second PIL was heard by the Supreme Court.Â
The current processÂ
Till now, the Constitution did not specify a particular legislative procedure for the CEC and ECs' appointment. Traditionally, on the Prime Minister's recommendation, the Union Council of Ministers recommends the nomination to the President.
Do you think this move would streamline selection process?
Right to menstrual leaves
Spain has offically become the first european nation to provide paid menstrual leaves. This legislation has broadened space for abortion and transgender rights as well.Â
This recent legislation, has garnered support within the country and even internationally. To increase awareness, the Spanish Gynaecology and Obstetrics Society shared that roughly one-third of women experience extremely painful periods.
Whereas some unions bewared the counter impact the legislation may have. UGT, has cautioned that the new rule may stigmatise women in the workplace and encourage the hiring of more men.
Whereas the opposition in Spain, stated, that menstrual leave could have "bad effects in the work market" for women.Â
However, spain has become a poster child, and many countries are following the lead. Zambia, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, and South Korea have provided space for menstrual leaves.Â
